Since the word “selfie” was added to the dictionary in 2013, the selfie craze has only been increasing. According to Google, there were more than 24 billion selfies uploaded to their photo app in 2015. Everyone from celebrities to politicians is obsessed with taking snapshots of themselves every day.

Family dentist Dr. Blagoev decided to use this new cultural phenomenon to help hungry families. If people enjoy taking photos of themselves for fun, they will be even more excited to do it for a charitable cause.

When asked why she decided to donate a meal on behalf of each person who takes a selfie, Dr Blagoev explained, “It is a growing problem. Food demands at the local food pantries have increased and yet food donations have decreased. Hungry families and children need help all year round and we all can help them together.”

She thought of this idea after reading about the rising selfie phenomenon. “I take selfies with my family. I thought why not make this a fun event where we could share our smiles, and at the same time make a family in need smile too?”

Dr. Blagoev is encouraging everyone to participate in the selfie program to help the local community. She called this the “Share a Smile, Make a Smile” program.

Dr Blagoev’s dental office has been providing cosmetic and family dental services to the local residents in Parlin, Sayreville, and Old Bridge Township for over 20 years. With numerous food drives, free dental days, and other social events, Dr. Blagoev has been featured on CBS, FOX, NBC network news.

As Olympics near, South Korea agonizes over post-Games costs

Dec 15, 2017

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — South Korean officials have ruled out turning a state-of-the-art Olympic skating arena into a giant seafood freezer. Other than that, not much is certain about the country's post-Winter Games plans for a host of expensive venues. As officials prepare for the games in and around the small mountain town of Pyeongchang, there are lingering worries over the huge financial burden facing one of the nation's poorest regions. Local officials hope that the Games will provide a badly needed economic boost by marking the area as a world-class tourist destination. But past experience shows that hosts who...

Mark Ruffalo is 'disgusted' with Trump's monuments decision

Dec 15, 2017

ATLANTA — "Avengers" star Mark Ruffalo said he is disgusted with President Donald Trump's plan to shrink two sprawling Utah national monuments by nearly two-thirds. Ruffalo told The Associated Press in a recent interview that Trump's decision was a "slap in the face" to Native Americans. Last week, the president signed two proclamations to reduce the Bears Ears National Monument by nearly 85 percent and cut Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by almost half. Trump's declarations would replace the federally-protected lands with five smaller monuments, cutting them by 2 million acres. Several lawsuits have been filed against the president, challenging his...

'Mannequin Skywalker' rides Blue Origin's new crew capsule

Dec 15, 2017

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Blue Origin's 'Mannequin Skywalker' has rocketed almost all the way to space, just in time for the new Star Wars movie. The aerospace company led by Amazon's Jeff Bezos launched its New Shepard rocket Tuesday from West Texas for the seventh time. It marked the first flight, though, of the latest version of Blue Origin's crew capsule, featuring big windows for future space tourists. An instrumented test dummy was aboard, named Mannequin Skywalker and dressed in a blue — naturally — flight suit. "He had a great ride," Bezos said via Twitter. The New Shepard rocket,...

US national parks to slash number of free days for visitors

Dec 15, 2017

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — National parks in the U.S. will sharply drop the number of days they allow visitors to get in for free, a move that was criticized by opponents of the parks' plan to raise entrance costs at other times of the year. After waiving fees 16 days in 2016 and 10 days in 2017, the National Park Service announced Tuesday that it will have four no-cost days next year. They will be Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 15), the first day of National Park Week (April 21), National Public Lands Day (Sept. 22) and Veterans Day (Nov....

Court keeps ban on new mining claims around Grand Canyon

Dec 15, 2017

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A U.S. appeals court has kept in place an Obama-era ban on new mining claims around the Grand Canyon, but a review under the Trump administration is putting it in jeopardy. The decision Tuesday by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes as a U.S. House committee heard testimony on access to minerals on public lands and dependence on foreign imports. The U.S. Forest Service under President Donald Trump has proposed reviewing the 20-year ban on new mining north and south of the Grand Canyon. Former President Barack Obama's Interior secretary made more than 1 million...
