Aug 16, 2018

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Outfielder Rolando Rodriguez from Panama heard a reporter's question, but doesn't speak English. So Georgia shortstop Tai Peete helped him out, pecking the words into Google Translate to ask about how young baseball players are sharing technology during the Little League World Series. "It was easier than expected," Rodriguez said of the language barrier, speaking through an interpreter. So goes life in the International Grove, the dorms where 16 teams all are staying during the double-elimination tournament in pursuit of a world title. LOS ANGELES — Traffic-weary baseball fans could someday travel to and from Dodger Stadium on a public transportation system underneath Los Angeles — if Elon Musk's latest bold plan comes to fruition. The billionaire's Boring Company tweeted a proposal Wednesday for autonomous, zero-emissions electric sleds that would run through a tunnel between the stadium and a location in the city's Hollywood area. The company says the so-called Dugout Loop system would be privately funded and not require tax money. Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted that it's exciting to see innovative ideas aimed at reducing traffic on LA roads. A proposal to...

By contrast, the rate stood at 3.89 percent a year ago. The average rate on 15-year, fixed-rate loans fell to 4.01 percent this week...

WWII POWs buried as unknowns in Hawaii get memorial marker

Aug 16, 2018

HONOLULU — Nancy Kragh grew up without her father, who was among 400 prisoners of war killed when a ship taking them from the Philippines to Japan was bombed. On Wednesday, she and other family members of prisoners on that ship dedicated a memorial stone to their loved ones. The marker lies within a national cemetery in Honolulu where the men are buried in 20 separate graves as "unknowns." Kragh only learned her father, Army Maj. Clarence White, was buried in Hawaii about 15 years ago thanks to research conducted by the son of another prisoner of war. The ceremony,...

Study: Smokers better off quitting, even with weight gain

Aug 16, 2018

NEW YORK — If you quit smoking and gain weight, it may seem like you're trading one set of health problems for another. But a new U.S. study finds you're still better off in the long run. Compared with smokers, even the quitters who gained the most weight had at least a 50 percent lower risk of dying prematurely from heart disease and other causes, the Harvard-led study found. The study is impressive in its size and scope and should put to rest any myth that there are prohibitive weight-related health consequences to quitting cigarettes, said Dr. William Dietz, a...
